VATICAN CITY (Reuters) – Roman Catholic nuns backed by Pope Francis on Tuesday raised the alarm over increased risks of human trafficking, exploitation of workers, forced prostitution and sexual tourism at the soccer World Cup in Brazil next month.

The nuns, whose campaign is also backed by the U.S. embassy to the Vatican, announced an international campaign called “Play in Favour of Life – Denounce Human Trafficking,” on the risks they say will be associated with the June 12 – July 13 tournament.

“We need to make people conscious of what happens on the margins of big world events such as the FIFA World Cup and the suffering of those who are trafficked,” said Sister Carmen Sammut, a Maltese nun and one of the campaign organisers.

“Without this awareness, without acting together in favour of human dignity, the World Cup finals may turn out to be a terrible shame instead of a feast for humanity,” she told a news conference at the Vatican.

Sammut said the initiative had the full backing of Pope Francis, an avid Argentine soccer fan who has called several conferences at the Vatican to study ways of combating human trafficking.

Sister Gabriella Bottani, an Italian nun who works in Brazil, said human traffickers and others took advantage of large events like the World Cup to exploit the most vulnerable.

She said young people from the countryside are lured with the promise of a job and forced into prostitution. Children in rural areas may be kidnapped and taken to cities hosting the venues and forced to beg.

Others who are already being exploited as sex workers may be forced to move to one of the 12 venue cities because they would be more profitable to their pimps.

In countries like Brazil, she said, large events could also give rising to kidnapping for adoption. “It is amazing how so many forces of evil can converge to cause so much harm against human freedom.”

The nuns said statistics showed that sexual exploitation rose 30 percent in connection with the World Cup in Germany in 2006 and 40 percent at the World Cup in South Africa in 2010.

The nuns will be raising awareness of the dangers of human trafficking and other crimes connected to the World Cup through their blog http://gritopelavida.blogspot.com.br/, their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/jogueafavordavida and other social media.

Volunteers will be handing out leaflets in cities in Brazil and other Latin American countries, warning of human trafficking and how to spot it. Several demonstrations are planned.

Catholic nuns have for years been in the front line in the fight against human trafficking.

They have formed the International Network of Consecrated Life Against Trafficking in Persons, known as Talitha Kum (Little Girl, Arise), a phrase in Aramaic taken from the Bible. It has members in more than 30 countries.

China, Russia, and Uzbekistan have been named among the worst offenders when it comes to human trafficking, according to a State Department report released Wednesday, joining Iran, North Korea, Cuba, Sudan, and Zimbabwe on the bottom “tier” of the U.S. human trafficking rank.

Their lower designation means the U.S. may sanction those countries with measures like cancelling non-humanitarian and military assistance, ending exchange visits for government officials, and voting against any IMF or World Bank loans.

China, Russia, and Uzbekistan had previously been on the “Tier 2 Watch List,” a middling designation for countries that show little progress in making strides in preventing forced labor. Because they had been on the “Watch List” for four years, the State Department was obligated to either promote or downgrade them.

In China, the one-child policy and a cultural preference for male children perpetuates the trafficking of brides and prostitutes.

“During the year, Chinese sex trafficking victims were reported on all of the inhabited continents,” the report found. “Traffickers recruited girls and young women, often from rural areas of China, using a combination of fraudulent job offers, imposition of large travel fees, and threats of physical or financial harm, to obtain and maintain their service in prostitution.”

However, the State Department also singled out the country’s epidemic of forced labor, in which both internal and external migrants are conscripted to work in coal mines or factories without pay, as well as its continued use of re-education hard labor camps for political dissidents.

In Russia, there are estimates that 50,000 children are involved in involuntary prostitution, said David Abramowitz, vice president for policy at Humanity United, an advocacy group. What’s more, about one million people there are thought to be exposed to exploitive labor conditions, including extremely poor living conditions, the withholding for documents, and nonpayment for services.

“In 2012, the government deported hundreds of labor trafficking victims found in squalid conditions in a Moscow garment factory and levied criminal charges against other trafficking victims allegedly held in servitude for a decade,” the report found.

Human Rights Watch has pointed out that some of Russia’s labor abuses have occurred during the preparations for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, with some workers enduring “12-hour shifts with one day off per month, having their passports confiscated, being denied employment contracts, and facing unsanitary and overcrowded employer-provided accommodations, with up to 200 migrant workers living in a one single-family home.”

Still, prosecutions for human trafficking there remain low compared to the scope of the problem, and the government has still not established any concrete system for identifying or helping trafficking victims, the State Department found.

In Uzbekistan, the annual cotton harvest has been the biggest human-trafficking culprit. The country is the world’s sixth largest cotton producer, and each year local officials force thousands of children to pick cotton in the fields in order to meet quotas cheaply. (Abramowitz points out that this year, the country actually replaced some of the child workers with teenagers and city workers, but it’s forced labor nonetheless.)

Abramowitz said the three countries could improve their “tier” ranking if they stepped up their training of law enforcement officials to identify and assist trafficking victims, cracked down on forced labor in factories, and became more transparent about their data on sex slavery and other human rights abuses.

Russia and China reacted angrily to the report, saying the rankings were based on diplomatic closeness with Washington rather than realities on the ground.

“The very idea of raising this issue causes indignation,” Russian foreign ministry human rights envoy Konstantin Dolgov said in a statement.

Beijing’s foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said, “We believe that the U.S. side should take an objective and impartial view of China’s efforts and stop making unilateral or arbitrary judgements of China.” 

In a forward to the report, Secretary of State John Kerry wrote that fighting human trafficking would remain a foreign-policy priority. “Fighting this crime wherever it exists is in our national interest,” he wrote.

Christless? I think so!

Hey bloggos! I am sitting here on this rainy day listening to the very beautiful Ingrid Michaelson and musing atheistic. I am also having a very interesting back-and-forth with a fellow WordPress blogger on the subject of my idiocy in the area of ‘HIS’ existence. In other words, he is using the bible to tell me how foolish I am for not believing in ‘The Lord.’ He believes that quoting bible verses makes people who question the god thing seem completely out of their minds. The only reason that I have even entertained this lunacy is because I am bored as shit and proving, yet again, that people are close-minded sheep for the most part. 90% of the masses will believe almost anything that someone ‘in authority’ tells them and will use the ‘ misery loves company’ mentality to spread the word of mass delusion.

Now, we know that all of the biblical passages mentioning Jesus were written approximately 30-80 years AFTER his death. There are no eyewitness accounts written about Jesus, and only two disputed articles written within 100 years before or after his death making any so-called evidence of ‘His’ existence completely contrived and 99.99% complete bullshit! During the time of Jesus and shortly thereafter, over 50 most prominent people of the time wrote NOTHING of the man called Jesus! These names include Josephus and Apollonius to name two and the others are found at the touch of a Google search, all easily referenced. Info on this is included on the sites http://www.jesusneverexisted.com and http://www.nobelief.com. There are also hundreds more that have been contributed to by countless trusted authorities on the subject, so please do the research and check these out for yourself. I handle my atheism like I handle my money. Why would I blindly trust someone else with something so important when I can learn the information myself?

The silence of history is also upon the existence of the apostles, and you would think that a man and followers who had caused such a shitstorm in the Jewish and Pagan faiths would have had a few more ‘Wanted’ posters drafted in ‘His’ image, but curiously that honor only falls to the OTHER famous folks of the time! Now the History Professor Bart Ehrman states in his book, Did Jesus Exist, some very interesting suppositions regarding alleged proof of the existence of the man Christ, but is refuted in several instances that are also available in a simple Google search and is the reason that I cite the title of the book. I do not name the rebuttals only because the ability to access them is only a keystroke away! I am not here to insult intelligence, only to expand it.

The REAL interesting meat of this all is on The Thinking Atheist website under podcast #101 which includes an interview with the renowned Prof. of Ancient History and Christianity expert, Dr. Richard Carrier, who appeared on the show’ Faith Under Fire’ and has debated none other than William Lane Craig! Dr. Carrier also has the pleasurable distinction to appear in Warren Allen Smith’s book,  Who’s who in Hell’, a list of non-believers who are going to burn in Yaweh’s imaginary lake of fire! I always like the whole’ if you don’t believe in my god you will burn in Hell’ idiocy! He also has given many talks on ancient history and Christian accounts of history that have been proven false. He has spoken on the Gospels and why they are mythological by including literary and writing analysis that has proven beyond a doubt that many of the book’ s cited authors were in fact not the stated ones.

Dr. Carrier published a book, On the Historicity of Jesus Christ, ‘ that confronts the accepted false accounts used by popular historians to supposedly prove jesus’ existence such as how priests communicated with Christ in vision and prayer as well as how he came upon this Earth in very much the same manner as several other deities. Theologians will dispute the ‘Other gods similarity,’ claims, but that is where careful research comes into play and attention to detail.

Dr. Carrier also has critiqued Dr. Ehrman’s book “Did Jesus Exist” and has called it very poor in writing and fact as if written very hastily, but recommends Ehrman’s book, ‘Jesus Interrupted’ as a mainstream manual on how modern day religious historians explain their position on the existence of Christ. Dr. Carrier has had several heated exchanges with Dr. Ehrman on the subject of Ehrman’s books that can be read by internet searching, ‘Dr. Carrier/Dr. Ehrman recap. The 1st result is usually “Ehrman on Historicity,’ and links to all of the other exchanges between the two individuals.

I have done much of this research myself and have come up with so many holes in the myth that is christianity, leading me to dismiss it as a definite appeal to the masses for control! I have been reading literature by Carrier and Ehrman to further inform myself so as not to expose myself to ignorant sheep-like behavior!

My father-in-law who has NEVER taken a religious history class and had been a life long bigoted racist until the recession told me that even though he does not believe in God anymore he knows that the historical Jesus HAS been proven. I countered with my evidence based in years of scientific research only to be told that I didn’t know what I was talking about. This is the tired old refrain of the lemming, don’t do research and inform yourself, just listen to the magic box in the living room!

I ask my blog followers to please do the research, no matter how in-depth it gets, so that the myth can be refuted and placed in the dustbin of all other dismissed crap. Listen to the above-mentioned podcast and digest the very informative and credible information. Until then, have a godless existence!

More Men…and the pope!

When I joined the Mormon church I thought it meant More Men!-The Village Priest. That wuz funny…not! Sorry, bloggin’ by the light of the flourescent candle here. Helpin’ with the demise of the wonder of ‘God’s glory, the human eye, which could’nt have possibly come of several million years of evolution! You say GOD?! I say, “If GOD wuz SOOoo great then why didn’t I get Predator vision? HMMMM? I want infra red, thermal and spectral analyzing capabilities! I want to be able to hunt Gary Busey in a freezing meat locker and do battle with Danny Glover! This is too much to ask I guess, because I got stuck with perfectly mundane binocular vision. I don’t even have eyeballs that rotate in different directions like a lizard! No laser vision, heat vision, X-Ray vision, (I’d use it to sparingly invade personal privacy but I’m a man, what do you expect?), etc.
No, I haven’t had to fly off and weld the hull of a sinking ship with my heat vision. I’m stuck listening to the prattlings of reformed but still useless unemployed drug addicts showing me cell phone pics of rocks that are in the shape of Jesus, (look! you can see where he shat himself!!). It’s a miracle! Fucker won’t give you a Goddamned job but he’s free flowing with the miracle snow globes and Buddy Christ dashboard statues! Go figure. I guess that if I were a toothless idiot with an I.Q of 60 then I too, would be impressed with cheap parlor tricks. Lord?
