Family removes 8-year-old ‘tomboy’ from Christian school after getting ultimatum

Eight-year-old Sunnie Kahle likes to keep her hair short, wear boys’ clothes, collect hunting knives and shoot her BB gun.

“She’s a pure, 100 percent tomboy,” said her great-grandfather Carroll Thompson, who along with his wife Doris adopted their granddaughter’s child.

But to Timberlake Christian School administrators, the second-grader’s boyish ways warranted an ultimatum: Start acting like a girl or find another school.

The Thompsons found another school, but they didn’t go quietly. After being told by lawyers that they have no grounds for a lawsuit because Timberlake is a private school, the Thompsons have gone public with their complaints.

“I don’t see nothing Christian about it,” 66-year-old Carroll Thompson said in an interview at the family’s house just outside Lynchburg, home of Liberty University, the Christian school founded by the Rev. Jerry Falwell.

Doris Thompson, who’s 69, said she was stunned when she received a letter last month saying the school can deny enrollment to applicants for condoning “sexual immorality,” homosexuality or alternative gender identity.

Principal Becky Bowman wrote that “we believe that unless Sunnie as well as her family clearly understand that God has made her female and her dress and behavior need to follow suit with her God-ordained identity, that TCS is not the best place for her future education.”

Doris Thompson said Sunnie knows she is a girl and has never, to her knowledge, wished she were a boy.

Other disputes over gender expression at school have made headlines recently, including a demand, later rescinded, that a 9-year-old North Carolina boy cease carrying a My Little Pony backpack to school. But that case and others involved public schools rather than private religious academies that are not subject to anti-discrimination laws.

After a television news report about the Thompsons created a social media frenzy, the school retained the legal arm of Liberty University to tell its side. Mat Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel, said there is more to the situation than the Thompsons are saying.

“This is not at all about how she is dressing or she is going through a phase,” Staver said in a telephone interview.

However, he said confidentiality laws prevented him from being more specific and school officials would rather not try to rebut the Thompsons’ allegations. Earl Prince, an administrator at the school, also declined to discuss what prompted Bowman’s letter.

Doris Thompson said she is unaware of anything, other than Sunnie’s appearance and tomboy ways, that would prompt the school’s action. She said Sunnie made good grades, was well-behaved and got along with the other children. New classmates would sometimes ask if she were a boy or a girl, but she would answer and that would be the end of it, Thompson said.

Bowman acknowledged in her letter that the school’s position doesn’t stem from Sunnie’s grades or “general cooperation with school rules.”

Staver said school officials were dismayed that the Thompsons chose not to resolve the issue with them privately. He said school officials would like to have Sunnie back.

“The school has never called the girl immoral, has never evicted her and is willing to work with her,” Staver said. “She is a precious little girl.”

This year, a girl mistook Sunnie for a boy in the girls’ restroom and reported it to a teacher, and two boys tried to drag Sunnie into the boys’ restroom. Sunnie said the boys got in trouble, but she did too “for yelling down the hallway.”

Sunnie, eager to break away from an interview and ride her bike, said she liked Timberlake better than the public school she is now attending.

“I had a lot of friends there,” she said of the school she attended since age 3.

Doris Thompson said Sunnie would grow her hair so she could return to Timberlake, but her husband said that’s “out of the question.”

Sunnie’s troubles at Timberlake began in pre-kindergarten after she cut her hair to donate it to a program that provides wigs for cancer patients, Doris Thompson said. Around then, she started wanting boys’ clothes.

“A teacher told me I was the parent and I needed to control her, and if she didn’t obey I needed to take her in the bathroom and whip her butt,” Thompson said.

Rather than just dismiss the teacher’s concerns, she asked the family doctor for advice. “He said, ‘Leave that child alone!'” she said.

Afterward, Thompson said the teacher told her: “You need to find a Christian doctor.”

This story on the Fox News board probably as a bash against the parents for condoning homosexuality, but this is a case of pure closed-minded discrimination affecting a child adversely and I am thrilled that the parents removed her from this religious toxic environment. Hopefully, this will leave the parents questioning the damage that they could be doing by indoctrinating their child into a discriminatory way of life. Religion has a few good things that they do, but it proves it’s illegitimacy every year that it waters down the Bible to attract more liberal followers. The facts are that if it changes so much, then it was never on the level to begin with and needs the dustbin.

Religion, like Hitchens says, poisons everything, and we would be MUCH better off without it. The tax coffers would be less depleted, wars would decrease dramatically, and people in general would treat each other better because of the lack of conflicting faiths! Honestly, I will never understand why gays, lesbians, people of color and anyone else persecuted by religion, embraces any part of a belief system held by their persecutors! Remember the quote by Chris Rock? “If your black and you are a Christian, then you have an awful SHORT fuckin’ memory.”

Aside

Hey bloggos! I am sitting here on this rainy day listening to the very beautiful Ingrid Michaelson and musing atheistic. I am also having a very interesting back-and-forth with a fellow WordPress blogger on the subject of my idiocy in the area of ‘HIS’ existence. In other words, he is using the bible to tell me how foolish I am for not believing in ‘The Lord.’ He believes that quoting bible verses makes people who question the god thing seem completely out of their minds. The only reason that I have even entertained this lunacy is because I am bored as shit and proving, yet again, that people are close-minded sheep for the most part. 90% of the masses will believe almost anything that someone ‘in authority’ tells them and will use the ‘ misery loves company’ mentality to spread the word of mass delusion.

Now, we know that all of the biblical passages mentioning Jesus were written approximately 30-80 years AFTER his death. There are no eyewitness accounts written about Jesus, and only two disputed articles written within 100 years before or after his death making any so-called evidence of ‘His’ existence completely contrived and 99.99% complete bullshit! During the time of Jesus and shortly thereafter, over 50 most prominent people of the time wrote NOTHING of the man called Jesus! These names include Josephus and Apollonius to name two and the others are found at the touch of a Google search, all easily referenced. Info on this is included on the sites http://www.jesusneverexisted.com and http://www.nobelief.com. There are also hundreds more that have been contributed to by countless trusted authorities on the subject, so please do the research and check these out for yourself. I handle my atheism like I handle my money. Why would I blindly trust someone else with something so important when I can learn the information myself?

The silence of history is also upon the existence of the apostles, and you would think that a man and followers who had caused such a shitstorm in the Jewish and Pagan faiths would have had a few more ‘Wanted’ posters drafted in ‘His’ image, but curiously that honor only falls to the OTHER famous folks of the time! Now the History Professor Bart Ehrman states in his book, Did Jesus Exist, some very interesting suppositions regarding alleged proof of the existence of the man Christ, but is refuted in several instances that are also available in a simple Google search and is the reason that I cite the title of the book. I do not name the rebuttals only because the ability to access them is only a keystroke away! I am not here to insult intelligence, only to expand it.

The REAL interesting meat of this all is on The Thinking Atheist website under podcast #101 which includes an interview with the renowned Prof. of Ancient History and Christianity expert, Dr. Richard Carrier, who appeared on the show’ Faith Under Fire’ and has debated none other than William Lane Craig! Dr. Carrier also has the pleasurable distinction to appear in Warren Allen Smith’s book,  Who’s who in Hell’, a list of non-believers who are going to burn in Yaweh’s imaginary lake of fire! I always like the whole’ if you don’t believe in my god you will burn in Hell’ idiocy! He also has given many talks on ancient history and Christian accounts of history that have been proven false. He has spoken on the Gospels and why they are mythological by including literary and writing analysis that has proven beyond a doubt that many of the book’ s cited authors were in fact not the stated ones.

Dr. Carrier published a book, On the Historicity of Jesus Christ, ‘ that confronts the accepted false accounts used by popular historians to supposedly prove jesus’ existence such as how priests communicated with Christ in vision and prayer as well as how he came upon this Earth in very much the same manner as several other deities. Theologians will dispute the ‘Other gods similarity,’ claims, but that is where careful research comes into play and attention to detail.

Dr. Carrier also has critiqued Dr. Ehrman’s book “Did Jesus Exist” and has called it very poor in writing and fact as if written very hastily, but recommends Ehrman’s book, ‘Jesus Interrupted’ as a mainstream manual on how modern day religious historians explain their position on the existence of Christ. Dr. Carrier has had several heated exchanges with Dr. Ehrman on the subject of Ehrman’s books that can be read by internet searching, ‘Dr. Carrier/Dr. Ehrman recap. The 1st result is usually “Ehrman on Historicity,’ and links to all of the other exchanges between the two individuals.

I have done much of this research myself and have come up with so many holes in the myth that is christianity, leading me to dismiss it as a definite appeal to the masses for control! I have been reading literature by Carrier and Ehrman to further inform myself so as not to expose myself to ignorant sheep-like behavior!

My father-in-law who has NEVER taken a religious history class and had been a life long bigoted racist until the recession told me that even though he does not believe in God anymore he knows that the historical Jesus HAS been proven. I countered with my evidence based in years of scientific research only to be told that I didn’t know what I was talking about. This is the tired old refrain of the lemming, don’t do research and inform yourself, just listen to the magic box in the living room!

I ask my blog followers to please do the research, no matter how in-depth it gets, so that the myth can be refuted and placed in the dustbin of all other dismissed crap. Listen to the above-mentioned podcast and digest the very informative and credible information. Until then, have a godless existence!

Call to action: Defend the bloggers of Bangladesh

Submitted by admin on 9 April, 2013 – 16:31

Take action - Atheist bloggers persecuted in Bangladesh

There is a serious threat to freedom of thought, expression and political opinion in Bangladesh.  Atheist and freethinking voices are the target (including the three bloggers paraded by the authorities in the image above).

Islamist political parties have provided government with a list of 84 “atheist bloggers” and are demanding the death penalty for “insulting religion”. Several bloggers have already been arrested and a government official promised to pursue all those listed.

Crowd at Islamist rally against atheist bloggers in Bangladesh

Last week, we said the government would be “walking into a trap set by fundamentalists” if they gave any succour to these demands. But they did. And on Friday a rally on the order of 100,000 Islamists marched in Dhaka (video) calling for a new blasphemy law and for the execution of the atheist bloggers. Earlier this year a prominent atheist blogger was murdered in a machete attack at his home, so we are also concerned about the safety in public of those accused of “blasphemy”.

We are urging IHEU Member Organisations and humanists everywhere to act now in solidarity with the bloggers and to put an end to the threats and intimidation.

Behind the headlines

Debate between secularists (committed to separation between state and religion) and Islamists, is not unusual in Bangladesh, especially online. But the debate has now warped into open persecution. As our statement on the arrests made clear, the cause of the escalation is political. The Islamist parties are lashing out after the secular Shahbag movement, which was organised by the bloggers, demanded justice over war crimes committed by leading Islamist figures during the 1971 war of independence from Pakistan.

Dhaka protest against atheist bloggers

Mukto-Mona is a freethinking blogging network, two of whose Bangla members are among the bloggers arrested. The founder of the group told us: “Government thinks that if they put several freethinking bloggers in jail, it will keep the fundamentalists happy for the time being. The government has taken this easy route to appease a handful of mullahs whose support they need to win the upcoming election.”

This means that not only are bloggers being targeted as atheists, the campaign is also a ploy on the part of the Islamist opposition parties, and the rights and freedoms of the non-religious are being used like cards in the hand of the government, to be played however it best suits them.

Government has given a mixed message. The Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has reiterated that Bangladesh is a constitutionally secular country and said, “Bangladesh does not need laws against blasphemy.”  However, she also said that “existing laws are enough” because “If anybody tried to hurt any sentiments of any religion or any religious leader, there is a law. We can take any action.”

Taking action!

At IHEU we are working with freethinking bloggers and Bangla activists and making use of diplomatic channels to apply pressure on the Bangladeshi authorities. We are also encouraging our member organisations to lobby their ambassadors to Bangladesh.

But we need a coordinated, global response to defend the right to express religious criticism and secularist principles, and also to defend political activism; if the government gives in to oppressive demands now, any debate with Islamist parties in the future may be branded “hurting the sentiments of religion or religious leaders”!

There are a number of petitions set up (see the list compiled by Mukto-Mona), however none of these petitions has achieved a large following. It may be that in this case, too few people are comfortable with the complexities on the ground, and there is no obvious single recipient likely to be affected by a diffuse worldwide petition. By all means sign them, but please consider the following other actions…

#HumanistSolidarity

Zapfino B for atheist bloggers in Bangladesh

1. Express your dissent online. There is a “Scarlet B” campaign for bloggers and others to express solidarity with the Bangladeshi bloggers (use the image on the right). The Twitter hashtag#HumanistSolidarity has also been used in connection with the Bangladeshi bloggers.

2. Rally and protest. Thursday 25th April is a good day to hold your coordinated protest outside the Bangladeshi embassies, in line with the international day of action declaration signed by our president and many others. Contact a humanist association in your country (see our Member Directory which can be searched by country) to see if they are planning a protest event. If you are protesting, you can download the IHEU-British Humanist Association leaflets which may be edited to create your own version. (See below.)

3. Contact the ambassador to Bangladesh from your country. The American Humanist Association has urged its members and supporters to contact the US Ambassador to Bangladesh and express their concerns. Individuals in most countries can undertake a similar action, writing to protest the arrests, and the threat to freedom of speech they represent. If a national ambassador receives even a small number of letters on the same topic this can draw an issue to their attention and raise its priority with the foreign government.

4. Contact the Bangladeshi embassy or foreign office desk. This may involve a little digging to find the right correspondence address or email in your country, but a short missive drawing attention to the arrests could mean another authoritative voice feeding back to the Bangladeshi government that all is not well!

As ever when writing to foreign diplomatic missions, or to your own international officials, get the facts right, get the request right, and do be polite (otherwise you will likely be ignored). IHEU is providing pro forma messages to our Member Organisations, but individuals are encouraged to write on their own for greatest impact. For example:

  • show that you understand the bloggers are being persecuted as atheists and for alleged “insuts” to religion, and that this is really a response of Islamist political parties to the Shahbag protests
  • recognise that the Prime Minister has spoken against any new blasphemy law and welcome her commitment to a secular state
  • but also express concern that she and other officials have said they will “take action” against atheist bloggers
  • maybe a paragraph about why the international human right to freedom of religion or belief includes non-religious individuals and how we should be concerned about persecution of the non-religious
  • you could explain that punishing the “atheist bloggers” now is giving in to intimidation, and will make it harder to stand up to Islamist demands in the future
  • most importantly, insist that criticising religion as such, or holding to account specific religious authorities in particular, is not automatically hateful and should be protected; this is essential to maintaining a secular state

Please feel free to co
