(CNN) — When Congressman Paul Ryan opined recently that there was a “real culture problem” in poor communities, “in our inner cities in particular,” and that this culture was behind some of the country’s economic troubles, he didn’t realize how half right he was.

People are continuing to debate fiercely what Ryan said and whether he meant to propagate racially coded explanations of poverty’s roots. But put that aside for a moment. Here’s what he was right about: There is indeed a culture in America that is pathological and now threatens our social fabric. It’s not the culture of poverty, though. It’s the culture of wealth.

We live in an age of extreme concentration of wealth in America. The problem is not just that the 1% have managed to nearly triple their share of national income in the last three decades. Nor is it just that the 1% increasingly are fed, schooled and housed in a bubble apart from the rest of their fellow citizens.

The problem is that today’s concentration of wealth is breaking the golden link that Ryan and others take pains to emphasize — the link between work and reward.

Economist Thomas Piketty’s landmark new book “Capital”unpacks this delinking in great statistical detail. It turns out that increasing numbers of Americans in the 1%, .1% and .01% have done little to “earn” their wealth or privilege.

Contrary to myth, most of today’s plutocrats are not the kind of Steve Jobsian visionary risk-taking entrepreneurs or superstar celebrities. The .01%, for instance, tend overwhelmingly to be high-end corporate managers and executives, particularly on Wall Street, operating in interlocking networks that inflate the standard of what an executive is “worth.” Or they are the heirs of the great entrepreneurs (4 of the 10 richest Americans are children of Sam Walton), inheritors of fortunes of which it can truly be said, “someone else built that.”

An aristocracy is emerging in America, a class of insiders that corrodes the promise of equal citizenship. And with this compounding of unearned advantage, certain antisocial values and behaviors have taken root among the superrich — norms that threaten to corrupt the rest of American society.

 a inequality’s an embarrassment

s Google to blame for the income gap?

What’s in this dysfunctional culture of concentrated wealth? Look around Wall Street. You’ll find tribal insularity, short-term thinking, personal irresponsibility, cynicism about playing by the rules, an aversion to socially productive labor, a habit of shameless materialism, an inability to defer gratification and a lack of concern for what “message” all this sends to the youth raised in such an environment.

In short, you’ll find the very things typically imputed to the culture of poverty.

Now, to be sure, there are poor people who do exhibit these antisocial values and norms. And there is no question that plenty of poor people are poor because they made bad choices and behaved in self-destructive ways.

But rich people who exhibit such values have something the poor don’t: Money. Money buys exemption from bad choices. Money confers power — in particular, over the poor. It confers the power to frame public narrative and policymaking and to determine whose behavior — whose culture — is (and isn’t) called pathological.

Today, as it was during the last Gilded Age, the concentration of wealth gives the rich the political clout to further concentrate their wealth. (And now, as then, the Supreme Court greases the skids in the name of “liberty“). This clout is wielded in plain sight now, without any pretense of civic equality. And it calls to mind the warning attributed to Justice Louis Brandeis: “We may have democracy, or we may have wealth concentrated in the hands of a few, but we can’t have both.”

When the richest 400 families in America have more wealth than the bottom 155 million Americans combined, the danger to the republic is far more clear and present than that posed by the “welfare queens” of lore or by anecdotes of shiftless inner-city men.

That would be true even if the super-rich today had entirely benign or merely neutral policy preferences. But in fact they’ve rigged the game of policy, subsidies and tax preferences to amplify and hoard their gains.

This isn’t to suggest that all super-wealthy people are “welfare kings” (they’re not) or to imply that they have a monopoly on selfishness or sociopathic attitudes (they don’t). Yet if it’s unfair to paint everyone in the 1% with the same unflattering brush of “dysfunctional culture,” isn’t it far worse to do the same to the poorest 20%?

Wealth and advantage are as strongly self-reinforcing as poverty and disadvantage. It’s possible to recognize this fact while also championing grit, gumption and good values. In fact, it’s essential. But culture doesn’t explain everything. And where it matters isn’t only among the poor or nonwhite.

If we’re going to reform the norms in this country so that opportunity is truly reflective of effort and talent, we have to do more than pick on those with the least. We have to start at the top.

-Again, start with the 90 Billion in church tax breaks, the NFL tax exempt status and all other huge corporate tax breaks and you have a good start. Applying skeptical and critical thinking along with a good bit of research and you will find the gap between the rich and poor exponentially widening. This is due to the fact that when you have enough money and influence you can load the dice in your favor.

The billionaires do not have to observe the laws that their paid minions write because they contain built-in loop holes dictated by said overlords, AND when the politicians get out of office, they just go to consulting jobs offered by the very same businesses that paid to have the laws written in the first place, yayyyy Sheldon Adelson, Koch Bros. George Soros and the people at ActBlue!!.

Before your time

Standard

I believe that anyone that considers themselves intellectual has heard the truly ignorant statement, ‘Oh, I think that was before my time.’ come from the mouth of a teen or twenty-something in regards to the mention of an event, movie or piece of literature that requires thought. These are the same people that will tell you that they believe in a 2000 year old book and deity but they know nothing of Shakespeare! Star Trek and Easy Rider were before my time but I believe that the bible is true! I haven’t READ the bible, but I believe that it’s true! Blah, blah, blah!

What is motivating these people to claim ignorance of anything that is not popular or from their generation? Do they think that it makes them look other than completely uncultured? I was listening to classical and jazz music by the time I was 20 and reading the classics throughout my teens. I was and am proud that I am well read and have worldly experience. I would have NEVER said that something that required intellectual investment was ‘before my time.’

The current lot seems to be following some kind of hipster script of lemming-like idiocy, but even hipsters pride themselves on knowing about obscure old movies and literature! The main streamers, the pop-icon followers are the problem I think. They don’t seem to want to be bothered with anything but what the latest mind-numbingly boring pop and young adult pulp bullshit publications such as the Twilight series and Taylor Swift’s latest uninspired piece of puling shit! Yes I sound like a self-important ass sometimes, but I respect knowledge born of music, theater and literature. I enjoy the classical, the hard rock, the grunge, and I appreciate the new as well. I just don’t discriminate against the things of a different era, I embrace them as a welcome addition to my repertoire.

A friend of mine recently divorced and in his middle thirties made the mistake of dating a girl, and I mean GIRL, in her mid-twenties. This person is a professional two years out of college to his 10 to 15. She is intelligent but I always got the feeling that the true core of this person was only skin deep. She seemed distracted all the time as so many young people appear, with her head in the clouds and her considerably beautiful swimmers body in the present, blindly checking for new text messages and studying her Facebook page for hours. She is very aware of the fact that she is beautiful and pours the narcissism out in generous portions seemingly oblivious to the eyes that watch. She believes that the attention is warranted and is completely expecting of it like the models that prance the runway.

My friend asked this girl to dinner a few times and to a movie or two, always paying of course. The airhead sat thru dinner and the movies bored out of her mind because they were eclectic pictures and required thought and contemplation. She also texted quite frequently throughout dinner giving the appearance that she was completely self absorbed and inconsiderate. The conversation seemed to always gravitate to her and the things that she liked and she frequently stated that certain things that he mentioned were ‘before my time.’ This, of course, has little to do with atheism but illustrates the simplicity of the beings that can claim to believe in something supernatural but can’t comprehend Nietzsche! So to those who are so obtuse and limited that they cannot comprehend anything that doesn’t happen in text or reality T.V, we don’t care about your limited sophomoric opinions and your pretentious superficial ramblings, when you get well read and take your heads out of your collective asses then we might actually give a rolling fuck about what you have to say. Until then, keep your goddamned Kardashian nonsense to yourself and text until your heart is empty and content! If you wake up…..Call me!

Young Atheism

Standard

Good Morrow Atheists and other readers!

Yes, I still struggle to get my message out there because this is my first blog ever! I have to strategically embed it into all of the leisure/social electronic networking that I do to spread the GOOD news! But I digress…

My daughter had her best friend over this weekend and she happened to leave one of her college papers here on accident and I just picked it up. The subject is religion and how people are still following it even though it is obviously filled with crooks in almost ALL of the leadership positions. She goes on to mention such mind-criminals as Joel ‘The Hole’ Osteen and various other modern day snake oil salesmen who are not at all masking their Tony Robbins style of mind control. Not that this is necessary seeing that 80 or greater percent of humanity are a bunch of vapid, media-digesting lemmings, but just so you know where this is going, get my drift? This is not new or news in that we already know that those of us who buck this archaic system of spiritual slavery are going to be reviled for our forward-thinking, our vision into a world absent of the yoke of religious oppression.

The paper goes on to point out various things that should be obvious to the average person, that the religion is not on the level and should be ACTUALLY regarded as a financial institution fully vested in the task of earning money for it’s leaders. The opulence in which these assholes exist and to which they elevate the church should at once be the cue, but serves to actually BUILD the flock of the blind! Check out the many Osteen books and seminars, the suits he wears, the money he makes and see if it can be equated with the simple robes and sandals supposedly worn by Jesus! Lemmings eat this shit UP! Some would say that this represents the Great Whore of the ‘End Times.” I say give me her number, I could use a good whore about now! HA! Just kidding! Seriously, the Great whore seems to come into the living room and to the mega-churches everyday and hoodoo EDUCATED people into believing this fairy-tale bullshit!

Just today I was into my Yahoo page and one of the stories was about Jillian Michaels and her new adoption as well as coinciding birth, from her partner, of their new baby. Now I clicked in because I thought I might get to see her in some of her incredibly sexy workout clothes but it was not to be. The article said that she was told early on that she could not have children. Ms. Michaels says that GAWD had other plans for her! This is where it gets to the point that I say that humanity is too stupid to carry on! In Vietnam many of the people are Christians as well as Korea. In Mexico almost all of the population is Catholic. In Ireland you have the Catholics and the Protestants. In the good ol’ USA you have a mix of all AND you have gays and lesbians that go to church, WHY!! All of the above groups that I have just named were FORCED to capitulate or they were killed! Why are these idiots still embracing the religion of their oppressors? Yes, I understand the sociology, but that means that we are truly base life forms who are to pass into history just like the Dodo!

These are frustrating times for those of us who embrace science and reason over cockamamie fairy bullshit. These churches are an unchecked infection that is ravaging mankind and the most prominent symptom is BLINDNESS! Todays huckster sells you on how ‘hip’ it is to believe in fairy tales, that GAWD doesn’t MIND if you have wealth because the ‘faithful’ deserve it for being so kind and upstanding! Church is now run on business models that are right out in the open now! They don’t have to hide it because the business man astually LIKES that his church is the most successful. Sound like the Mormons? They have been following the business model for years earning them the animosity of the other faiths, but now that it’s the ‘in’ thing, it’s popular now for all churches to be a business. This and they dangle the fact that other church members will only patronize YOUR business because you are one of them.

Beware, is all that I can say. Beware of these motivational spiritual self-help books based in religion that will encourage you to believe that you can’t improve yourself without faith. When I envision ‘The Great Whore’, besides thinking of yo’ mama(just kidding, I am a guy you know), I see these Creflo Dollar/Joel Osteen/Benny Hinn fucking illusionists preying on the weak-minded, the troubled and the psychologically injured souls who are searching for meaning and falling for the Tony Robbins-like pump-up to make them feel whole again. Atheists tend to have these traumatized souls as well, but traumatized from religion. We also have the fiercely independent people who think appropriately that religion is just another crutch, a plug in the the leaky wall, a band-aid and not a viable solution to problems that need a PERMANENT solution.

On that note, I will say FUCK FUCKETY FUCK FUCK FUCK!! Strange ending? Sorry. I had a houseguest over the weekend who calls EVERYONE on ‘Language’. This isn’t because of religion, but the adherance to certain rules closely resembles that crap! With such prose as the above, I am finding that one does NOT necessarily use cursing because their vocabulary is lacking, please see above rant as an example. I have NEVER been accused of the lack of vocabulary, indeed I have been vociferously accused of using my ‘Harvard Mouth’ to baffle and gain the upper hand in a debate! Team America-FUCK YEAH! I will now sign off and attend to the business of fighting religion by other means. Please, if you are a believer, leave a response. I have not been, in one of my thousands of debates with believers, been swayed or even close to beaten when debunking religion. I have science and reason and NOTHING trumps THAT!  Peace out!
